What Do Head Lice Look Like?

Human head lice are about the size of a sesame seed. They are minuscule, wingless insects, about 1 - 5mm long. They move through the hair very fast.

Depending on how much blood has been ingested, head lice are either light grey or dark brown in appearance.

Head lice can move through the hair quickly and easily. They have six jointed legs that end in small claws which perfectly adapts them to moving through hair. This also prevent them being dislodged, as it enables them to cling to the hair shaft.

The live eggs can be found very close to the scalp and are dark brown. Dead eggs (nits) are white.

If you look closely, you will see tiny eggs that are attached to the strand of hair, close to the roots. They can be hard to see, and are dark or light in color. It helps to look for them in a well-lit room or in sunlight, as they have a smooth, shiny surface that reflects light well. This is the easiest way to tell if your child has head lice, so look for nits in the child's hair first.
